The reputation of diet pills with ephedra is still remarkable. Millions of consumers each year persist in the effort to look for ephedra products that have not been available for years. Products like Stacker 2 with ephedra, Xenadrine RFA-1, or Hydroxycut with ephedra, and of course Metabolife 356 the company that made it has gone bankrupt due to the large amount of lawsuits.

Ephedra diet pills are, of course, made with ephedra (also called Ma Huang) a natural herb grown mainly in China and India. Ephedra was used medicinally for thousands of years before it became known for its ability to promote weight loss. But for ephedra to work as a weight loss aid you need a high concentration of the ephedra alkaloids (like ephedrine) and you also need caffeine to help boost the effects.

Ephedra had not been originally used for weight loss till it was found around twenty years ago to encourage the body to release and burn fat. When the alkaloid ephedrine, found in ephedra, is used in large enough amounts over a long enough period of time the body will tend to consume additional fat for fuel, more than it normally does resulting in weight loss.

About 300,000 deaths occur in the US because of problems due to obesity such as heart disease. Very soon 75% of all Americans will be considered overweight. Many will always want a quick fix diet pill and that will never change. What will change is the fact that the drug companies will increase their profits because they will continue their campaign to crush effective herbal remedies like ephedra.

Products like aspirin (called NSAIDs or Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) killed an estimated 7,600 people and hospitalized 76,000 more in the US in a single year. How about the fact that in a single year (2000) there were over 100,000 deaths from the proper use of prescription drugs. Compare that information to the fact that ephedra and ephedrine drugs may have possibly contributed to a grand total of 84 deaths during a 10 year period. Now the ephedra ban when compared to those numbers makes no logical sense at all.

In response to a stressful situation, your sympathetic nervous system gears up to either go to battle or escape a situation immediately. Heart rate and blood pressure increase to prepare the body for action. Ephedrine mimics the effects of epinephrine and norepinephtine, the two naturally occurring chemicals in the body primarily responsible for the fight or flight syndrome. When you take ephedrine, then, you're basically stimulating your sympathetic nervous system, causing: a faster heartbeat, increased force of heart contraction and increased blood flow, increased blood pressure, increased thermogenesis (the body's heat production, generated by calorie-burning) increased blood flow to the brain slightly increased basal metabolic rate.

Ephedra was never as bad as the government made it out to be. They never had any real intention of allowing ephedra, an inexpensive and effective weight loss herb, to stay on the market. There is no doubt that it wasn't for some people and some people were harmed by it. But the majority of people found that it performed a great service by helping them to lose weight.
